Brian C. speaks with Jim Michaelian

Long Beach promoter Jim Michaelian thinks a 'Triple Crown' type-format highlighting the series' diversity would be good for IndyCar.

Yesterday, AutoRacing1.com columnist Brian Carroccio asked Grand Prix Association of Long Beach President/CEO Jim Michaelian about the changes to the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series championship. In particular, Brian wanted to get Mr. Michaelian's thoughts regarding the series' decision to award double points in the three 500-mile races at Fontana, Indianapolis and Pocono, while keeping the other races such as Long Beach the same.

Michaelian did not criticize the decision, but did offer this interesting observation. "In the past I have been supportive of a different format which would be analogous to the 'Triple Crown' for horse racing. In that format the series would pick a street race, a road race and an oval which could vary from year to year and put some kind of added points incentive for those. That way they could highlight the diversity of the tracks as one of the strengths of series."

Yesterday, Brian C. shared his thoughts on the matter in this column.
