Kasey Kahne is unemployed after 2017 and he is scratching around trying to find a way forward.

The 37-year-old's six-year tenure with Hendrick Motorsports will come to an end at the close of the current Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, one year before his contract was scheduled to expire. While his priority is to find another full-time seat at NASCAR's top level, he told reporters on Wednesday that he has also pondered a mixed program involving NASCAR, sprint cars and IndyCar.

"Three or four days ago I had a great plan to do sprint cars, and see if I could do an IndyCar race or two, do a couple of NASCAR races like the [Daytona] 500, the Brickyard, things like that," Kahne said.

"I thought that would be quite a dream, and pretty awesome to do. But if I can come up with a strong deal for next year then I'd like to do that. I enjoy racing NASCAR and I feel like I don't want to get too far away from it, because I feel I still have some strong years left in me to race in the Cup series."

"I drove an IndyCar a couple of times. I really enjoyed it and I've talked about doing the Indy 500 a few times; it just never was able to work with other team owners and things," he said.

"It just never worked out, but it's always been something on my mind. It just hasn't worked with the NASCAR deal, and the teams and owners that I've driven for, and we just haven't ever been able to put it all together. If I wasn't racing full-time Cup, that would be, like, top priority – how can I figure out how to be part of a couple of races there?"
