Juncos Racing's Spencer Pigot won the 2015 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship today by capturing victory in Race 2 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Starting out the outside of the front row, Pigot overtook polesitter Max Chilton for the lead heading into turn 1. Meanwhile his closest championship contender Jack Harvey, who started fourth was penalized for jumping the start. The Brit would never recover and finish 9th, while Pigot led flag-to-flag to score his sixth victory of 2015.

Atlanta's Sean Rayhall made it an American sweep of the top-two spots. Chilton was third, with Ed Jones and Shelby Blackstock rounding out the top-five. The man of the moment however was Pigot.

After capturing the 2014 Pro Mazda championship, Pigot and Juncos Racing made the jump to Indy Lights for 2015. In 16 races, Pigot stood on the podium 10 times, and earned the championship of North America's top junior single-seater category. By virtue of winning the Indy Lights championship, Pigot joins an illustrious list of names that includes current Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon (2000) and current IndyCar drivers Josef Newgarden (2011), Sage Karam (2013), Gabby Chaves (2014), Tony Kanaan (1997)and Tristan Vautier (2012). Pigot joins Vautier as the only driver to win the Pro Mazda and Indy Lights championships back to back.

The 21-year-old also essentially punched his ticket to at least three 2016 IndyCar Series races, and an opportunity to participate in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 with the Mazda scholarship that goes to the Lights winner.

"It's been a great year. We came out of the gate strong with a couple of podium finishes and then struggled at a few places, but that's to be expected with a new team and new driver," said Pigot, who swept three doubleheader weekends at Barber, Toronto and Laguna Seca. "Every day after a difficult weekend we would put our head down and come back. I thanked the team for never giving up and never losing trust and faith in me and always working together."
