St. Pete Grand Prix ticket holders won’t get refunds for canceled race

Those who held tickets to this weekend’s canceled Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg IndyCar race will not receive a cash refund.
Officials for the IndyCar race, scheduled to be the series’ season opener, announced their compensation policy Saturday night. Though the policy offers several options for ticket holders to recoup their investment, it does not allow for an outright refund.
Ticket holders “may choose to defer their purchased tickets for use at the March 2021 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg," said the statement from Green Savoree Racing Promotions.
“Alternatively, ticket purchasers may elect to receive a credit for the full amount paid plus an additional 10 percent" to apply toward admission to three other races still on this year’s schedule that are promoted by Green Savoree: the July 12 Honda Indy Toronto; the Aug. 16 Honda Indy 200 in Lexington, Ohio; and the Sept. 6 Grand Prix of Portland in Oregon.
Ticket holders will receive “detailed instructions and next steps" through email, the statement said.
The lack of a refund didn’t sit well with some on Twitter.
“You owe us our money back," wrote Brian Clapper.
“That is ridiculous!" wrote Paul McCracken. “I was coming from Canada. I now have airline cancellation fees, hotel cancellation fees and now I can’t get my St. Pete tickets refunded. Terrible business decision."
Rest assured, they are never coming back.
