Can Fernando Alonso beat Will Power and the other IndyCar regulars? |
We are just 3-weeks from May’s second most important race for betting. That “Second" being the Indy 500 to yesterday's betting extravaganza of the Kentucky Derby. NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula 1 are now in full swing with the month of May now upon us and motorsports betting is picking up steam across the globe with the Indy 500 being the biggest and most popular. And this year Fernando Alonso is making his 2nd attempt at the world's biggest race, the Indy 500. Can he win it? Want the scoop on the best Indy 500 betting?
May is THE month for betting on auto racing, specifically the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend that includes F1’s Monaco Grand Prix (9:10 a.m. ET, ESPN), IndyCar’s Indianapolis 500 (12 p.m. ET, NBC) and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 (6 p.m. ET, FOX).
The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, according to the Indy marketing team, is considered part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The Triple Crown of racing comprises three of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. Also included in this trio is the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Last year Bump Day returned to Indy. This year, Bump Day is getting a new look.
Under IndyCar’s new guidelines, only positions 10-30 will be up for grabs on Saturday, May 18, the first day of 500 qualifying. The Fast Nine Shootout will remain on Sunday, May 19, but the cars on the outside of the top 30 will now have to wait until Sunday to decide their fates. See our recent article on the Bump Day and guaranteed starting sport controversy.
Because the Indy 500 is such a high-profile race, some oddsmakers have already opened odds for what’s referred to as, “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."
Defending champion Will Power and Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden are co-favorites at 7-1, followed by Alexander Rossi and Scott Dixon, both available at 8-1. However, owing to his worldwide popularity from being F1 World Champion twice, Fernando Alonso will be the most followed driver the month of May and on race day many people will be betting on him and his McLaren team to win.
