Driving the superior McLaren-Mercedes #81, Oscar Piastri rebounded from the disappointment in Australia by winning the 2025 Chinese GP ahead of teammate Lando Norris at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Starting from pole, Piastri was never bothered at the front and beat Norris by 9.748s and completed another McLaren 1-2. The McLaren is the car to beat in 2025 on every type of circuit.

With his 2nd place finish, Norris now leads the championship standings with 44 points, followed by Max Verstappen with 36, George Russell with 35 and Oscar Piastri with 34.

2nd place qualifier George Russell completed the final podium position in third, 11.097s behind Piastri.

Defending World Driving Champion Max Verstappen initially fell behind the two Ferraris at the start in the Red Bull sled, and ran 6th early on, but recovered to beat both Ferraris to finish 4th, 16.656s behind Piastri.

Liam Lawson, in the same Red Bull that Verstappen is carrying on his back, finished 81 seconds behind Piastri down in 15th after qualifying the sled in last place.

Lawson finished one position behind the Racing Bull of Isack Hadjar who many feel will replace the struggling Lawson alongside Verstappen before long.

Charles Leclerc nursed a damaged left front wing on his #16 Ferrari the entire race to complete the top-5, 23.211s behind Piastri.

Despite the damaged wing, Leclerc beat his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, who ended by 25.381s behind Piastri using a 2-stop strategy.

The first five finishers – and the vast majority of the field – completed the caution-free race on one stop.

Hamilton and Verstappen were the first of the front-runners in the lane, both taking on a set of hard compound tires.

Verstappen had fallen off the back of the Ferraris that had been ahead of him, more than five seconds away from the red machines after his opening stint on the medium Pirellis.

A lap later, as he completed Lap 14, Piastri stopped to hand the lead to teammate Norris.

McLaren called Norris in next time around, as did Ferrari with Leclerc to leave Albon in the lead.

Norris fed out side-by-side with Russell, losing out to the Mercedes driver around the long Turn 1 as Norris found himself boxed in behind Stroll’s Aston Martin.

As they started Lap 18, the McLaren driver regained the place from Russell with an aggressive move into Turn 1 under braking.

Esteban Ocon was a strong seventh for Haas after their tough start to 2025, followed by the other Mercedes of rookie Kimi Antonelli in 8th, 53.748s behind Piastri. Antonelli had costly floor damage from the first lap that he picked it up running over Charles Leclerc’s lost front wing end plate.

The Williams of Alex Albon was 9th while the 2nd Haas of Ollie Bearman rounded out the top-10.

Jack Doohan had a sloppy race, picking up a 10-second penalty for a clash with Isack Hadjar, and was classified 16th.

The teams now have a week off before the Japanese GP at Suzuka on April 6th.
