With the announcement today that IndyCar will add Hybrid Technology to their cars starting in 2022, comes word that the cars will have onboard starters should a driver spin out and stall the engine. And as long as the cars batteries are charged, the electric motor, which has great torque, can help get the car rolling easier.

Which leads to the latest rumor – Standing Starts. With the help of the electric motor off the line (to supplement the internal combustion engine), IndyCar can now implement Standing Starts with little fear that a driver will stall on the grid. z

While the driver may get too much wheelspin, or dump the clutch too quickly, thereby bogging down the internal combustion engine, the electric motor should get the car moving forward, which means, in the event the drivers stalls the internal combustion engine, he can pop the clutch while the car is moving forward by the electric motor, and restart the internal combustion engine.
