Supercars News: Kostecki cruises Sunday at the Gold Coast 500
Brodie Kostecki has won the Sunday Supercars race at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 to take his second win of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship season.
Kostecki won today’s race by 3.4 seconds but seldom appeared challenged in the 85-lap race, which comes just a fortnight after his popular win with Todd Hazelwood at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
The 26-year old from Perth was followed home by Triple Eight teammates Will Brown and Broc Feeney, with the trio taking home the coveted surfboard trophies synonymous with the Gold Coast event.
Saturday’s winner Cam Waters and teammate Thomas Randle rounded out the top five, with the former carrying a damaged front bar for the majority of the second half of the race that hampered his efforts in repeating Saturday’s heroics.
Hometown hero Chaz Mostert suffered a second consecutive day of heartache in Race 22.
While contending for the podium, Mostert’s Walkinshaw Andretti United crew used the wrong fuel rig in Mostert’s second pit stop and did not put enough fuel in the car, requiring a third pit stop that dropped him to a 11th place finish.
Now 309 points adrift of championship leader Will Brown, Mostert and Waters (428 behind) have been mathematically eliminated from championship contention.
Today’s race opened with a dramatic 11-car pile-up at Turn 11 on Lap 1, which forced Dick Johnson Racing’s Anton De Pasquale to retire on the spot, while several others soldiered on with damage.
Following a Safety Car period for that incident, the race became a 78-lap sprint race, with drivers pushing to the max for the remainder of the 250-kilometre race.
Brown will take a 180-point advantage over Feeney into November’s VAILO Adelaide 500, with only the two Red Bull drivers mathematically eligible to win the championship.
The season finale of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship season takes place on the streets of Adelaide November 14-17, 2024.
