Supercars News: Waters shines on Saturday on the Gold Coast

Cam Waters has won Saturday’s Supercars race at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 in dominating fashion.

Cam Waters wins race 1 of the 2024 Boost Mobile GC 500, Event 11 of the Repco Supercars Championship, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. 26 Oct, 2024.

It is the Mildura native’s fourth win of the 2024 season, the most he has won in a single season.

Waters’ teammate Thomas Randle finished second in Tickford Racing’s first 1-2 finish since 2017, coincidentally the Saturday race on the Gold Coast, when Chaz Mostert led Waters home.

It’s a repeat effort for Waters, who won the Saturday race from pole in 2023 as well.

Randle’s runner-up finish equals his career-best. The 28-year old was followed closely by Gold Coast local Broc Feeney, who finished third in his first career podium at his home race.

After a crash in qualifying this morning, championship leader Will Brown received to finish sixth, and now holds a 171-point lead over Feeney in the standings.

There was only one car that had the pace to challenge Cameron Waters in the Gold Coast 500 opener and that was Chaz Mostert, but the WAU driver’s victory hopes were destroyed by a bizarre issue.

Mostert appeared to have raced his way to a safe second as Waters’ nearest challenger, 5s back prior to the first round of stops.

But it was already evident that the WAU driver was setting a hot pace despite encountering a gear position sensor issue.

As a result when the #25 arrived in the lane, it lost a significant amount of time as Mostert had to guess which gear to use in the lane.

After losing 5s on the first round of stops, the problem only got worse as the race went on.

At times looking like a serious threat for victory, Mostert finished 10th and is now 243 points adrift of Brown.

The party continues tonight as Kingswood, Spiderbait, and Jet hit the stage at Club 500 on Macintosh Island inside the circuit.

Another 250 kilometers of racing and 150 points are on offer on Sunday at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
