NASCAR: Legacy Motor Club poaches Engineer From Hendrick
Legacy Motor Club has poached highly regarded engineer Brian Campe from Hendrick Motorsports, seeking to boost their performance in the sport after a horrible 2024 season.
Campe attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville before completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2004. The Madison, Alabama-native began his professional career as a data acquisition/race engineer for driver Paul Menard at Dale Earnhardt, Inc., from 2002 through 2005.
Campe then moved over to Hendrick Motorsports in the engineering department and was with the team until 2008. Campe had a brief stay at JR Motorsports in a similar role before he began a 12-year tenure with Penske Racing, where he switched from the stock cars of NASCAR to the open-wheel cars in the INDYCAR Series.
During his tenure at Penske Racing, Campe held multiple roles including the winning race engineer for the 2015 Indianapolis 500 with Juan Pablo Montoya, and he was the race engineer in 2017 when the team claimed the INDYCAR championship with Josef Newgarden behind the wheel. In 2021, Campe rejoined Hendrick Motorsports to serve as the Director of Performance Development before transitioning into the role of Technical Director. Earlier this year, he called the shots at Arrow McLaren as Kyle Larson’s strategist at the 2024 Indianapolis 500 when Larson attempted the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 – Indianapolis 500 double on Memorial Day weekend.
“LEGACY M. C. has been on a mission to acquire world-class team members. That quest has led us to some extraordinary people that now includes Brian Campe,” said Cal Wells III, CEO of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB. “There’s no doubt the opportunity to have Brian lead our engineering efforts into the future and will ultimately place LEGACY M. C. among the truly elite within NASCAR’s Cup Series.”
“I’m super excited to join LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and am looking forward to the opportunity and challenge ahead. I believe in the vision for LEGACY M.C. and hope to help build on the talent already in place and bring my experience to the organization so we can compete for wins at NASCAR’s highest level,” Campe said.
“The addition of a talent like Brian Campe is integral to the success of LEGACY M.C.,” said LEGACY M.C. co-owner Jimmie Johnson. “Brian’s experience with championship teams like Hendrick and Penske will make him a huge asset to LEGACY M.C., and we are eager to see the improvement his leadership will bring to the engineering arm of the CLUB.”
