Supercars News: Gold Coast, Townsville events renewed thru 2027

Supercars drivers and staff were on hand across Queensland today, following Tuesday morning’s announcement that the championship will continue racing on the streets of Townsville and the Gold Coast for at least another three years.

In conjunction with Tourism and Events Queensland, Supercars today announced a new three-year extension that will see the Repco Supercars Championship continue racing at the tenured street circuits through 2027.

The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 was first held as an Indy car event in 1991, and with Supercars racing at the venue since 1994. Today it serves as the state’s largest annual sporting event, attracting over 201,000 patrons in 2023.

Surfers Paradise
Surfers Paradise – IndyCar used to race there when CART ran the series at the height of its popularity, but the race promoters make more money from a Supercars-only weekend.

The series first raced on the streets of Townsville in 2009, this year celebrating its 15th anniversary on the hybrid street circuit at Reid Park, in the shadow of Castle Hill.

With over 126,000 attending this year’s event in July, the Townsville 500 is North Queensland’s largest annual sporting event.

Several drivers and staff spoke to media this morning in Townsville and on the Gold Coast about the importance news, and were joined by numerous local officials celebrating the continuation of Supercars in Queensland.

The Repco Supercars Championship returns to action in just over a fortnight at the Repco Bathurst 1000, October 10-13.

The streets of Surfers Paradise will then come to life with the 2024 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 taking place October 25-27.
