NASCAR News: Series makes changes to playoff practice sessions

NASCAR is adding some practice time at a couple of playoff racetracks, according to Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass.

NASCAR will be adding extra practices for its upcoming races at Watkins Glen and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The change at Watkins Glen includes an extra 20-minute session to get up to speed on the new tire code at the course. Those races are scheduled for the weekend of September 15.

The Xfinity and Cup races in Charlotte will have one extra practice to compensate for changes to the infield portion of the course. Those races are scheduled for the weekend of October 13.

Those changes consist of a 50-minute session for all cars in the Xfinity Series and two 20-minute sessions in the Cup Series.

“NASCAR has added extra practice for Xfinity & Cup at Charlotte b/c changes to infield portion of course — Xfinity 50-minute session all cars; Cup two 20-minute sessions for each group. …Cup teams also get extra 20-min session at The Glen with new tire code used at June test,” Pockrass wrote.

The first race in the NASCAR Cup playoffs will be the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on September 8.
