NASCAR News: Series adjusts rain tire procedure on ovals
NASCAR announced Thursday that it has adjusted the rain tire procedure on ovals where applicable.
Ovals where the rain tire is used are Phoenix Raceway, Martinsville Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway and Richmond Raceway, where the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will compete this weekend. This also includes the Milwaukee Mile and Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in the Truck Series.
Natural caution and still in wet weather conditions
- Tire changes permitted (wets for wets)
- Teams will manage how they will use their wet weather tire allotment of four sets
- Team’s option to stay out on the track and gain positions in relation to those who entered pit road
If natural cautions fall while the track is still deemed in wet-weather conditions, tire changes will be permitted from wets only to wets.
Teams will manage how to use their rain tire allotment of four sets, meaning that teams will have the option to stay out on the track and gain positions in relation to drivers who elect to pit. Previously, NASCAR dictated when teams were allowed to change wets for wets on ovals.
The updated procedure will be used if needed for both the Truck race Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, FS1) and the Cup race on Sunday (6 p.m. ET, USA).
