NASCAR News: Officials update two rules ahead of Richmond race

After a two-week summer break for the Olympics, NASCAR updated two rules ahead of this weekend’s racing action at Richmond Raceway.

According to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, NASCAR tweaked its red flag procedure to address pushing a stalled car.

“Following red flag conditions, pushing assistance will be provided to vehicles unable to start,” the updated rule says. “The pushing distance will be limited and determined solely by NASCAR to allow the vehicle an opportunity to start. Vehicles requiring additional assistance may be penalized with a Tail of the Field penalty.”

NASCAR also updated the at-track penalty rule. The penalties must be enforced after an affected vehicle receives a green flag and enters pit road on a pass-through, stop and go, or if holding a vehicle for a lap or time penalty.

They won’t drop to the rear on a restart following an opening-lap yellow flag.

Some confusion regarding NASCAR rules has dominated recent Cup Series discourse. Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski received blend line violations at the Brickyard 400, but Kyle Larson avoided a similar violation on his way to a victory.

NASCAR sent a memo about that protocol before the race, but more clarification can hopefully avoid additional penalty debates entering the Cup Series playoffs.

Sunday’s Cook Out 400 is one of four races remaining in the regular season.
