Supercars: Mostert takes clean sweep with Sunday win in Sydney

After winning last night, two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert has completed a Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight sweep, hunting down Cam Waters and Will Brown for victory in Race 16.

Gold Coast’s Walkinshaw Andretti United ace Mostert moved to second in the championship with the win, and is just 105 points behind Brown heading to Symmons Plains. After Darwin, the margin was 279 points.

Broc Feeney, who led the championship in the first two rounds, is now 153 points behind teammate Brown, having slashed the margin to 78 points in Townsville.

It’s the first time since 2015 Mostert has taken consecutive race wins and first time in his career he has swept a race weekend.

Second behind Mostert’s Mobil 1 Optus Mustang today was fellow Ford driver Cam Waters, third was Championship leader, Red Bull’s Brown.

Race Start – Mostert takes clean sweep with Sunday win in Sydney

It’s the fourth consecutive win for a Ford driver, with Chevrolet Camaros last win coming in Darwin in June.

It was Mostert’s third win of 2024, and 24th of his career – taking him past Jim Richards to outright 16th on the all-time Supercars’ win list.

“It’s just a credit to the whole Walkinshaw Andretti United crew. We obviously rolled out a pretty good car and kept chipping away at it,” Mostert said.

“Quali, we’re there or thereabouts this weekend, but the race car was something pretty special around here. Today the car was even better again which is a real credit to the team.

“I’m not sure what happened in those last 10 laps but when you’re leading and you’ve got a bit of a gap, you think something is going to go wrong.

“It took me all the way back to go kart days when you’re seven or eight and winning a state title and you hear the engine note change and all this kind of stuff. The last 10 laps were hell for me.”

Mostert bookended his race with crucial overtake, passing pole-sitter Will Davison on lap 1 before getting by Waters and Brown in the final 11 laps.

Walkinshaw Andretti United opted for a two-stop strategy for Mostert, and armed with superior pace, chased down one-stoppers Waters and Brown with 11 laps to go to take the lead.

Waters took the lead once Cameron Hill and Jack Le Brocq stopped on lap 35. Stanaway was 1.3s behind, with Brown hounding the Penrite Ford. As Brown passed Stanaway, Mostert had slashed the margin to Waters to six seconds.

With 11 laps to go, Mostert made his move on Waters into Turn 1, and regained the lead.

On the final lap, Payne cleared De Pasquale for fourth at Turn 2, with Davison, Kostecki, Golding, Percat and Randle rounding out the top 10. Feeney was 11th, 33 seconds from the leader.
