IndyCar News: Herta and McLaughlin win Iowa race poles
Andretti Global Honda driver Colton Herta has won the pole position for Hy-Vee Iowa IndyCar Race 1 and will start 4th for Race 2 with laps of 187.526mph and 188.248mph at Iowa Speedway.
Team Penske Chevy driver Scott McLaughlin will start 2nd, alongside Herta, for Race 1 and on the pole for Race 2 with laps of 187.526mph and 188.248mph.
McLaughlin beat the old lap qualifying speed of 186.809 mph set by Helio Castroneves in 2014.
Alex Palou will start 3rd for Race 1 and 2nd for race 2 with laps of 186.841 mph and 187.572 mph, respectively.
Team Penske’s Will Power will start 4th for Race 1 but only 22nd for Race 2 after he brushed the outside wall lightly.
Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon will start 5th for Race 1 and 3rd for Race 2 with laps of 186.208 mph and 187.102 mph, respectively.
Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward will start 6th for Race 1 and 7th for Race 2 with laps of 186.074 mph and 185.857 mph, respectively.
Autoracing1 talked with O’Ward after his run and asked him about the second lane usage tonight.
“I expected more from my run, to be honest. Pretty disappointed. So we can work from the 6th and 7th, I’m just hoping the second lane opens up. Definitely, after yesterday, it doesn’t seem like it is going to happen, but you know, we will see.”
“Yesterday, we could not even run it with this race tire. It was fine in the second lane practice when we used the test tire we used a couple of weeks ago. But not with the tire Firestone decided to bring to the race. It really had been unrunnable. Everyone that went up there shunted.”
There are two grid penalties for Race 1, both for an unapproved engine change. Graham Rahal and Kyffin Simpson with both lose nine grid positions.
