MotoGP News: Marc Marquez wins pole at Jerez

Marc Marquez may be back to his old ways, mastering the tricky damp conditions to storm to a historic pole position at the Gran Premio Estrella Galicia 0,0 de España in Jerez, Spain in a wild qualifying session.

The #93 claimed a maiden pole position with Ducati and a 93rd pole across all classes. Marc Marquez will be joined on the front row by Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing) who returns to the front row in Spain to the delight of Valentino Rossi.

Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) improved on his second run to storm to an important front-row start in third.

Setting the initial pace in the damp Q2 session, a late switch to a medium wet tyre allowed Marquez to produce a 1m46.773s secured him a first pole since last year’s Portuguese Grand Prix when he rode for the Repsol Honda team.

KTMms Brad Binder came through a wet Q1 to qualify fourth, while last year’s Spanish GP winner Francesco Bagnaia was shuffled down to seventh on his factory Ducati.

Some big names further down the field

Behind a talented front row was Q1 graduate Binder, who was less than one second away from pole position after the South African posted a 1:47.730 lap time. Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio will start the Spanish GP from fifth position in the second row of the grid after showing pace on Saturday morning. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) rounds off the second-row start and a great qualifying for Gresini and the Marquez family.

Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) is down in seventh position, making it the first time since 2021 that the Italian hasn’t started on the front row in the first races of the season. The front seven riders opted for the medium wet tire, with Morbidelli qualifying in eighth on the soft wet tire. The Q1 graduate was ahead of Ducati Lenovo Team’s Enea Bastianini, who rounds off an all-Ducati third row of the grid.

Meanwhile, Acosta will start down in 10th place after the rookie was unable to find the time to battle for pole after the crashing. Acosta will start ahead of Americas GP winner Maverick Viñales, who is forced to charge through the field
