Formula 1 News: Sainz puts Ferrari on top on Day2 pre-season test
With Max Verstappen sitting out running on Day 2, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr. strapped on a C4 soft tire and turned a lap of 1m29.921s to finish 1st in Bahrain.
With Sainz Jr. the only driver doing a ‘glory run’ on the soft rubber, the rest of the drivers turned their top laps on the C3 medium Pirelli Tires.
Sergio Perez was 2nd for Red Bull, 0.758s behind while Lewis Hamilton was 3rd for Mercedes, 1.145s back.
Lando Norris finished 4th for McLaren, 1.335s behind the soft-tire shod Ferrari.
Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top-5 on a set of C4 soft tires, 1.440s behind
Charles Leclerc, who led the morning session, ended up 6th overall in the #16 Ferrari, 1.829s back.
Lance Stroll was 7th for Aston Martin, 2.108s behind.
Of the three drivers who were in the cockpit all day, Perez managed 129, Hamilton 123 and Sargeant 117 for starters.
Sainz’s lap on the C4 rubber couldn’t be beaten. He set a 1m 29.921s which isn’t too far off last year’s pole here, a certain indication that this year’s cars are much, much quicker than their 2023 counterparts.
Sergio Perez was the most productive in terms of laps completed, while Carlos Sainz was the quickest. And while it’s unwise to read too much into anything at testing, given the variety of pregames in play across the field, there are a few things we can learn after a second day of track action at the Bahrain International Circuit
It’s not worth reading much into Sainz’s pace-setting time, given we have no idea how much fuel he was running or what configuration the car was in – however, it is understood the data the car is delivering on track is correlating well with what the wind tunnel and CFD suggested over the winter.
