IMSA Rolex 24 Hour 6: #7 Porsche out front at 1/4-Mark
We’ve reached the quarter mark of the 2024 Rolex 24 Hours, and it’s the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 that now leads, after a daring move by Matt Campbell on Tom Blomqvist’s #31 Cadillac round the outside at Turn 1.
Watched by record crowds, the race got underway at 1:40 pm local time under scattered clouds and in summery temperatures of 26 degrees Celsius.
Up front, Campbell has a eleven-second lead over the #31 Cadillac. With 18 hours to go and the night hours underway, the entire 10 car GTP field remains on the lead lap.
The No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac of Renger van der Zande ran third, with Rene Rast and Filipe Albuquerque having completed the top-five for BMW M Team RLL and Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, respectively.
The class at the six-hour mark was led by the No. 04 CrowdStrike by APR Oreca of Malthe Jakobsen, ahead of Felipe Fraga’s Riley entry.
Paul Miller Racing’s Bryan Sellers was out front of the GT ranks and in GTD Pro, ahead of the No. 47 Cetilar Racing Ferrari 296 GT3, which pitted for service just after the six-hour mark.
The new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R was firmly in contention in the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO class after the first quarter of the Rolex 24 At Daytona – the opening race of this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Earl Bamber in the No. 4 Oshkosh/Mobil 1 Corvette ran third to pace the Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports’ two-car effort. The trio of Bamber, Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg climbed their way from sixth in class – and 21st of all GTD category cars – at the start to eighth among all GTD runners.
The No. 3 Z06 GT3.R with Daniel Juncadella at the wheel ran fourth in class after six hours. His Corvette – which he shares with Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims – led in class early in the race before the sun went down and track conditions cooled.
