Formula 1 News: Series popularity rockets upward in 2023

Not only are all the Formula 1 races sold out, the series popularity on Netflix is exploding. Last year, Season 5 of Drive to Survive saw an increase of 558% over Season 4.

Season 5 has been watched 90.2 million hours, a phenomenal number that underscores the great things Liberty media is doing with the series since it bought it.

There has been a lot of complaining by Lewis Hamilton fans about Max Verstappen’s dominance, saying the races are boring.

In fact, F1’s popularity is exploding as a result of fans enjoying Verstappen’s complete domination of British driver Lewis Hamilton.

The British fans thought Hamilton was the greatest driver in history, only to find out Verstappen is even better.

Non-British fans enjoy watching Verstappen’s superior skill. British fans hate it.

Formula 1 is the most popular sport show on Netflix

This data underscores why the struggling IndyCar Series should be sold to Liberty Media.  F1 races are watched by 70 million people worldwide. IndyCar is lucky to get a little over 1 million. It is irrelevant to 99.99% of the world population.

Below is our table of F1 event statistics, updated for 2024. Over 6.15 million people, a record, came through the turnstiles to see Formula 1 in 2023.

This dwarfs all other motorsports series in the world, including NASCAR. NASCAR has more races, but they only get big crowds on race day, whereas F1 races attract big crowds all three weekend event days.

Fans are attracted to the premier motorsports series in the world, and they are willing to pay huge ticket prices for the privilege.

The 2023 season promised the most jam-packed calendar any Formula 1 campaign has ever seen, with a total of 23 races on the line-up, but Imola was rained out, so only 22 races were actually held.

2024 will see the addition of two additional races, and we could see another new attendance record.
