Rumor: Ferrari may supply Andretti team engines (Update)

If this rumor can be believed, Ferrari may be interested in supplying engines to the Andretti team until such time as Cadillac can design and build their own engine.

However, now two other possible engine suppliers have emerged.

FIA President Mohammad Ben Sulayem says Andretti would qualify for a supply of engines from 2025 or 2026 as he said the long-term aim was for General Motors/Cadillac to produce its own power unit.

“We are demanding that, and we will see that,” Ben Sulayem told selected media, including Autosport, about the potential for an engine from GM. “But engines are not built in four or five years.

“At the beginning, Andretti will have to agree on one of two engines.”

Ben Sulayem believes that Appendix 6 of F1’s Sporting Regulations will apply to Andretti in giving it the option of requesting a supply from one of the manufacturers that is supplying the fewest customer teams.

“It works that, with the rules, nobody can say no to them,” he said. “If all the teams say no, then the FIA has the power to go on and say, the least two [engine manufacturers] being used, then we put them in a draw, and we take one.

“It’s not a secret, and I’m sure it is either Alpine or Honda, and one of them would win because that is the rules.”

For Andretti to secure a customer supply from Alpine or Honda, it would need to put in a request before 1 June of the year prior to its entry.

With the Renault engine deal having expired, leaving the FIA approved Andretti Cadillac team without an engine, rumor has it that Ferrari may step in.

Andretti-Cadillac must be supplied by one of the four current engine suppliers in 2025 and one of the six engine suppliers in 2026, if the team does indeed enter the F1 grid.

Frederic Vasseur has spoken out against an 11th team joining the Grid, but if it gives Ferrari another political vote on issues, he might change his mind.

We’re certain Michael now realizes that the Renault engine is the slowest in F1, so he may be seeking a deal with Ferrari, as their engine is right up with the best of them.

Ferrari would consider supplying engines to Andretti-Cadillac, Formu1a.uno reported. Currently, Ferrari supplies engines to two customer teams, Alfa Romeo (Sauber) and Haas.

However, Alfa Romeo will become Audi in 2026 and that team will no longer run with Ferrari engines. However, in order to retain some political votes, Ferrari does want three teams to continue to run with an Italian engine.

Also, Mario Andretti drove Ferrari F1 cars and won the South African GP and the Questor Doubleheader in 1971 in a Ferrari, so the Andretti family has a relationship with Ferrari.
