Before leaving politics at last year’s state election, Pakula oversaw the major events and sports portfolios, which included oversight over the Australian Grand Prix.

He helped secure a deal as minister that meant the event would remain at Albert Park until 2035.

“It’s a great honor to be able to help shape the future of motorsport in Australia, and to ensure that F1 and MotoGP fans come here from across the state, the nation and from around the globe to watch the world’s best motorsport events,” Pakula said.

“I’m looking forward to a fabulous MotoGP at Phillip Island in just over a week, and to working with new [Australian Grand Prix Corporation] CEO Travis Auld to strengthen Victoria’s place as the home of motorsport.”

Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said Pakula’s previous experience would help the Australian Grand Prix remain “one of the great events anywhere in the world”.

“We look forward to him leading the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to deliver two annual world-class international sporting events for Victoria,” he said.
