F1: Verstappen’s domination of Perez in numbers

–by Mark Cipolloni–

Sergio Perez is the latest Max Verstappen teammate to be dominated by the Dutchman. Below is the breakdown in numbers, and it isn’t pretty.

Verstappen vs. Perez

Verstappen After 16 Races Perez
3.19 Avg. Grid Position 8.94
1.38 Avg, Race Position 5.25
1.38 Avg Race Position (No DNFs) 4.33
13 Victories 2
15 Podiums 8
0 DNF 1
400 (64.21%) Points 233 (35.79%)
781 (84.62%) Laps in Front 142 (15.38%)

The fact is that this year Max has scored 400 of Red Bull’s points, while Perez has managed 223.  The stark nature of the gap is seen better, perhaps, in the fact that in the Constructors’ Championship, second-placed Mercedes has only 305 points, which means that Verstappen has actually won the Constructors’ title on his own.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says Sergio Perez’s lack of confidence in the car through high-speed corners continues to be his Achilles heel.

Perez’s confidence issues through high-speed corners, of which Suzuka has many, remain at the heart of his massive performance gap with Verstappen.

“This is a big confidence circuit and where Sergio was struggling was mainly in the high-speed corners compared to Max,” Horner explained.

“You could tell Max the confidence that he had, the speed that he was able to carry through the high-speed stuff was mind-boggling.”

“He’s still second in the world championship and I think he’s finished second to Max six times so far,” he added.

“So, had Max not been there it would have been another six races on top of the two he’d already won.

“Max is absolutely at the top of the game. He’s the best driver in Formula 1 at this point in time and I think everything has to come together; car, driver, team in total harmony.”
