Rating Analysis

NASCAR

The USA Network got a 1.41 rating and 2.430 million viewers for Sunday’s NASCAR race at Richmond, slightly down in rating and slightly up in viewership from a 1.45 rating + 2.390 million viewers from last year’s comparable event, which was in mid August.

Formula 1

ESPN got 1.170 million viewers for the Belgian GP Formula 1 race Sunday morning, up 12% from 1.045 million viewers in 2022.

It was the largest USA Television audience on record for the event.

Once again, F1 gets a healthy 42% of its viewers in the all-important 18-49 year old group, leaving all other forms of motorsports sucking its exhaust fumes.

Saturday’s Sprint on ESPN attracted 555K viewers at 10:25 a.m. ET.

Friday’s qualifying averaged 405K viewers between 10:54 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. ET.

The 2023 season has had three of the four largest live audiences in history on U.S. television:

  • Miami 1.96 million
  • Monaco 1.79 million
  • Canada 1.76 million

Five races this year have set event viewership records (Saudi Arabia, Monaco, Canada, Austria, Belgium).

All but two races this year have averaged more than 1 million viewers:

  • Australia (aired in overnight hours) – 556K
  • Azerbaijan – 959K

Through 12 races, the 2023 F1 season is averaging 1.24 million viewers per race across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC

How much have F1 audiences grown? In 2018, the first year the Championship returned to ESPN platforms, F1 races averaged 554K.

NHRA
