IndyCar: WWTR race may need a fire sale
–by Mark Cipolloni–
While NASCAR packs them in when they bring the Cup series to Gateway (now called World Wide Technology Raceway, or WWTR for short), the track may need a fire sale for the WWTR IndyCar race.
Immediately we saw a downturn in IndyCar ticket sales (see above photo from 2022) once NASCAR brought a Cup race to that market, which is not uncommon as we have seen that in other markets – Fontana, Michigan, Phoenix, Chicagoland, Pocono, etc.
Not many markets can support both a big IndyCar and a big NASCAR Cup race. Even the Indy Speedway cannot – the IndyCar Indy 500 is a big seller, but NASCAR on the Indy oval is like a ghost town.
IndyCar has tried to race in many of the traditional NASCAR Cup markets and failed miserably – Atlanta, Richmond, Dover, Charlotte, Pocono, Loudon….the list goes on.
With about one month to go before the IndyCar race at Gateway, a look at the seating chart shows about 3/4 of the seats still available.
Hopefully, ticket sales will pick up as the race nears, or the track may be forced to plaster the market with free or ultra-cheap tickets.
Buy a cup of coffee, get four free grandstand tickets, or something like that.
