Rumor: Mercedes aims to beat Red Bull at Silverstone (Update)

–by Mark Cipolloni–

It is no longer a rumor, it is now ‘fact’ that Mercedes aims to beat Red Bull at Silverstone.

Listen to what Toto Wolff says.

Wolff further told media about the planned upgrades:

“We are bringing a larger [upgrade package] to Silverstone. And then we should have another one before the [summer] shutdown [before the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of July.] The learnings [of the car] have accelerated a lot since we changed some of the conceptual architecture. There should be decent steps coming in the next four races and we are understanding better the simulations, which correlates with what we are seeing on track.

With Red Bull bringing only minor upgrades as they focus on next year’s car, the other teams are beginning to close the gap.

Earlier in the year, Red Bull was winning by 30 seconds.

Then it was 20 seconds.

The last race in Montreal, the gap between 1st and 2nd was 7.9s.

Mercedes to give Hamilton winning car at Silverstone

In Montreal, Lewis Hamilton finished 14.1 seconds behind Verstappen, but he really wants to win the British GP in front of his home fans.

Toto Wolff told Auto Motor Sport that there will be two more upgrades for the W14 before the summer break, including a “big one in Silverstone.”

The Silverstone upgrade package could be even bigger than the package they brought in Monaco.

Wolff: “We still have two in the next races. A big one in Silverstone, the other before the summer break.

“If the new parts are as successful as the last development step, then Mercedes will have the confidence to challenge Red Bull in the second half of the season.”
