F1: Smog cloud hangs over Canadian GP (Update)

Following discussions between race organizers, local government officials and the F1 Incident Management Group this week, no concerns have emerged about the event being impacted.

Despite the fires, an F1 spokesperson told Mail Sport that the event is not yet at risk, adding: ‘We have been assured by all the relevant information that the situation in Montreal at this time is different to other parts of the country and northern US, the risk remains low and air quality is good in Montreal.’

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has been thrown as far west as Chicago and as far south as Washington, DC.

The total area burned across Canada is larger than the entire US state of Maryland and is 15 times greater than the 10-year average.

(GMM) After the cancellation due to floods in Imola recently, a smog haze is now hanging over next weekend’s running of the Canadian GP.

CTV reports that local forest fires have blown smog over the greater Montreal area – where Formula 1 will gather at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

“Those with respiratory issues, such as children with asthma, are advised to avoid strong physical activities outdoors until the warning is lifted,” the report said.
