F1: 2023/2024 Silly Season will be wild
–by Mark Cipolloni–
With 1/3 of the F1 drivers (7 in total) up for contract renewal at the end of the 2023 season, Silly Season, which begins in earnest in about 3 months, promises to be wild.
We rate their chances now, early in the season
Driver Contracts Expiring after 2023
Driver | Team | Discussion | Prediction |
Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes | Won’t retire until he wins that 8th title | Will stay with Mercedes |
Nyck de Vries | AlphaTauri | Will still have to impress team boss Franz Tost if he wants to secure a renewal for next year and beyond. Red Bull can always replace him with Daniel Ricciardo | If he does not perform well, his F1 career will be over after 2023 |
Logan Sargeant | Williams | Will still have to impress team boss James Vowles if he would like to secure a renewal for next year and beyond. | Brings money and F1 wants an American driver. Predict he will be re-signed |
Yuki Tsunoda | AlphaTauri | While the Japanese driver has often struggled in comparison to his previous teammate Pierre Gasly, he has shown signs of improvement | He will be re-signed. As long as Honda is supplying the Red Bull teams engines, Yuki’s ride is likely secure |
Kevin Magnussen | Haas | New Haas teammate Nico Hulkenberg is eating his lunch so far. Assuming that continues, Guenther Steiner will show him the door | Will be replaced. Daniel Ricciardo is talking to the team. There are other options as well. |
Nico Hulkenberg | Haas | Has been beating his teammate at Haas like a drum | Will be re-signed |
Zhou Guanyu | Alfa Romeo | The CHinese youngster has been performing well against veteran teammate Valtteri Bottas. Hopefully, Chinese GP will return in 2024 | Will be re-signed |
