Supercars: Feeney wins Sunday race, Kostecki new Championship leader

The next generation of drivers has arrived in the Repco Supercars Championship and they are making a name for themselves after a huge weekend at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Red Bull Camaro rising star Broc Feeney today won the Beaurepaires Melbourne SuperSprint finale, with Coca-Cola Camaro youngster Brodie Kostecki scooping the series lead and Larry Perkins Trophy.

A happy Broc Feeney

Feeney, who won his first race at last year’s VALO Adelaide 500, led home the R&J Camaro of Andre Heimgartner and Kostecki to make it a Chevrolet 1-2-3 in the final race of a huge weekend in Melbourne.

Shane van Gisbergen and Jack Le Brocq made it a Chevrolet top five, with Will Davison the first Ford home in sixth.

Bryce Fullwood was in contention for a podium, but was undone by an unsafe release for the second time in as many days.

Fullwood was classified 18th after a 15-second time penalty was applied.

Erstwhile points leader Chaz Mostert was classified 14th, and ceded the lead in the championship to Kostecki.

Kostecki will take a 32-point lead over Mostert with van Gisbergen 86 points behind in third.

Kostecki and his Coca-Cola Erebus teammate Will brown hold their lead in the Teams’ Championship now by 101 points.

It’s the first time an Erebus Motorsport driver has led the Supercars drivers’ championship.

“When I survived the first lap and was nearly faster than them over the back, I was like ‘this is good’, ” said Feeney.

“I sort of let Chaz and Will go and tried to slot in behind and then fresh air was awesome.

“This morning, it was a flip of a coin what we were going to do but we certainly made the right strategy.

“What a way to win, Grand Prix Sunday, I’ve dreamt of this for a long time.”

Kostecki added: “We made a good choice and started on the hards and was able to hang onto the soft pack there on the first lap.

“Made a few changes overnight, more towards Will (Brown)’s direction, and the thing was an absolute jet, I was able to pound away doing fast times and jump the soft runners out the front.

“(The Larry Perkins Trophy) means a lot to myself and also to our team as well, especially to Barry (Ryan), it was a bit emotional crossing the line knowing we were going to collect that trophy.”
