Automotive: Woke GM Deep Sixes the Camaro, all-electric racing future murky

The Chevrolet Camaro is going out of production.

General Motors said Wednesday it will stop making the current generation early next year.

The future of the car, which is raced on NASCAR, Supercars, and other circuits, is a bit murky. GM says another generation ‘may’ be in the works but if there is, it will be all-woke electric.

“While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story,” Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, said in a statement.

Spokesman Trevor Thompkins said he can’t say anything more about a future Camaro. “We’re not saying anything specific right now,” he said

If GM revives the Camaro, it almost certainly will be electric. It would be unlikely to see another internal combustion engine vehicle since ‘woke’ GM has said it plans to sell only electric passenger vehicles worldwide by 2035.

Woke GM decision makers hard at work planning to go all-electric when that is not what consumers want. There are not enough battery minerals on earth for all cars to be electric. They are fighting over chargers in California already, and less than 2% of the cars on the road are electric. Wait until it reaches 20% – all hell will break loose.

Thompkins said GM has an understanding with auto-racing sanctioning bodies that the sixth-generation car can continue racing. GM will have parts available and the Camaro body will stay on the race track, he said.

But what good is it if GM is no longer selling the car? Zero marketing value having it in racing so look for GM to pull the plug on any factory support and factory R&D.

NASCAR said that because the Generation 6 Camaro was in production when GM originally got permission to race, it remains qualified to race in NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Xfinity Series races.

Prediction #4: If the IMSA and WEC goes all electric, it will be its eventual demise. Sportscar fans have little interest watching sewing machine sounding electric cars race. Imagine doing a 24-hour race with electric cars! Good luck charging those batteries.

Supercars Gets Screwed

After just rolling out their new Generation cars calling it Camaro vs. Mustang, the Supercars series is not happy at all.

Supercars CEO Shane Howard said:

“While today’s General Motors (GM) news out of the U.S will have an impact on our racing product, we respect and acknowledge that change is sometimes inevitable.

“We will continue our strong partnership with GM into the future.

“Ever since Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland famously won in a Holden Monaro at Bathurst in 1968, GM has helped shaped the careers of some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s greatest drivers, including Peter Brock, Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and most recently Shane van Gisbergen.

“For fans, the Camaro will continue to proudly represent Chevrolet Racing in the Repco Supercars Championship until at least the end of 2025.”
