Supercars: Reynolds claims pole as Ford goes 1-2 in Shootout
2017 Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds will start from pole position in this afternoon’s final race of the historic Thrifty Newcastle 500 in which Mustang drivers will start from three of the top four spots on the grid.
In a shootout that featured five Camaros and five Mustangs, the #26 Penrite Racing Mustang of Reynolds was the quickest.
It’s the 37-year-old’s 16th career pole position and second in Newcastle (he claimed one other in 2018).
He will now start alongside fellow Ford ace Chaz Mostert in the first blue oval lockout of the Gen3 era, following a dramatic ARMOR ALL Top ten Shootout on the scenic Newcastle circuit.
Reynolds pipped Mostert on his flying lap, by just 0.006 of a second.
The best of the Chevrolet drivers in the Shootout was exciting youngster James Golding, who will start from third spot in the #31 Nulon Racing Camaro.
Joining Golding on the second row of the grid will be Ford’s Monster Energy Mustang ace Cam Waters, who will run with the orange #6 after being declared the winner of Saturday’s race.
Shane van Gisbergen, who was first across the line on Saturday afternoon but was this morning disqualified – will start from fifth today – the same grid spot he started from on Saturday.
Starting sixth will be Tim Slade in the #400 Nulon Racing ahead of van Gisbergen’s Red Bull Camaro teammate Broc Feeney – who’s second placing yesterday was also disqualified.
Starting eighth is the Camaro of Truck Assist Racing’s Jack Le Brocq next to the Ford Mustang of Todd Hazelwood.
James Courtney’s Snowy River Caravans Mustang will go down as the first in the Gen3 era to suffer significant damage.
Courtney crashed into a tire wall after missing a curb, causing significant damage to his Mustang which required a tow truck to bring it back to pit lane.
