F1: Aitken no longer Williams F1 reserve driver

After being overlooked for American Logan Sargeant, Jack Aitken has confirmed his departure from Williams.

Daytona participant Aitken has spent his years since F2 dovetailing his reserve duties at the Grove-based outfit with sportscar programs.

Having made the move to IMSA with the Action Express Cadillac team, Aitken and Williams have now ended their relationship.

Aitken made his grand prix debut at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, standing in for George Russell who had moved to Mercedes to cover for Covid-struck Lewis Hamilton.

“We’ve mutually decided to part ways,” Aitken told Autosport.

“I kept an involvement last year, which was great.

“I really like the team and I’m based half-an-hour away from the factory, so it was very convenient to do simulator work and I was happy to help and attend some races.

“But my calendar is too busy these days. I want to focus on my racing program and on where my career is going, which is in sportscar racing.

“They’ve been very supportive of that, and equally they’ve got younger guys coming through their academy, and they want to give them seat time and time in the sim. It just made sense.”
