NASCAR: Joe Gibbs loses another son, father of Ty Gibbs

Coy Gibbs, the father of Ty Gibbs and son of Joe Gibbs, has died suddenly at age 49.

Coy Gibbs also served as an assistant coach for the Washington NFL team from 2004 to 2007 under his father. He played linebacker at Stanford from 1991 to 1994.

Coy was the COO/vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing; he was at Phoenix Raceway last night to watch his son win the NASCAR Xfinity Series title.

Yesterday, Ty Gibbs won the NASCAR Xfinity Championship. Today his father Coy died at the age of 49. Coy’s father Joe, who owns Joe Gibbs Racing, has lost his second son, but his team is in the fight for the Cup this afternoon – if it chooses to do so. What a tragic day.

Coy is survived by his wife, Heather, and their four kids.

Racing is a family and the relationships within the entire garage go so much deeper than on-track competition. Today, we lost a dear part of our family. The loss of Coy Gibbs is devastating to everyone at Toyota and TRD. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with Joe, Pat, Heather, Ty, Case, Jett and Elle and the entire Gibbs family and Joe Gibbs Racing family.
