Supercars: Davison and Waters top Friday Surfers Paradise practice

After three years of waiting, Supercars has finally return to the streets of Surfers Paradise today for opening practice for the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

It was local driver Will Davison who claimed early bragging rights, clocking the fastest time in opening practice in his #17 Shell Ford Mustang.

Following practice, three-time Supercars Champion and now IndyCar star Scott McLaughlin, who used to drive the #17 Mustang, made a cameo appearance in pit lane.

Davison unseated series leader Shane van Gisbergen, who led for the majority of the 30-minute session.

Van Gisbergen, who can secure the title as early as Saturday, was edged to top spot by Davison by just 0.01s.

Cam Waters, the only driver who can stop van Gisbergen winning the title, was third.

Waters Tops Practice 2

Cam Waters has topped a tightly-contested Practice 2 at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Waters, Will Davison who was quickest in opening practice, Shane van Gisbergen and Chaz Mostert were covered by just 0.09s.

Six different teams were represented in the top six, with David Reynolds fifth ahead of Andre Heimgartner.

“It was a little bit wild, to be honest,” Waters said.

“Scraping all the fences and stuff, probably a little bit too close for my liking.

“The car’s fast, we definitely made a few improvements between practices, so that’s great.”

On qualifying, Waters said: “It’s super important. You want to be starting up the front.

“It’s hard to pass around here… I think we’ve got a good race car, which is pretty important around here.

“Being such a long race… I’m fine with the heat, I’m used to it being from Mildura, it’s bloody hot there.”
