IMSA: Acura on the Pole at Road America
It’s a P1 start for Filipe Albuquerque, Ricky Taylor and the Wayne Taylor Racing team as Albuquerque qualified their #10 Acura ARX-05 on the pole today for Sunday’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Fastlane SportsCar Weekend at Road America.
The pole position comes at a vital time in the championship for Wayne Taylor Racing, as the team battles for the championship with fellow Acura team Meyer Shank Racing. For their efforts, the #60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-05 will start third with co-drivers Tom Blomqvist and Oliver Jarvis.
Steven Thomas claimed top qualifying honors in LMP2, taking his No. 11 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson to a fast lap of 1:54.137 to edge out teammate Patrick Kelly in the No. 52 entry.
LMP3 class pole went to the No. 33 Sean Creech Motorsport Ligier JS P320 Nissan of Malthe Jakobsen, who recorded a 1:59.434 lap time to give the team its first top qualifying run in series competition.
Hawksworth, Foley Take GTD Pro, GTD Class Poles
Vasser Sullivan’s Jack Hawksworth claimed top qualifying honors in GTD Pro while Robby Foley took his Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 to the class pole in GTD.
Hawksworth, in the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3, reeled off a best lap of 2:05.365 in the closing moments of the session, edging out GTD Pro championship leader Matt Campbell in the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R by 0.253 seconds.
Foley’s 2:06.084 was good enough for fourth quickest amongst the production-based cars and fourth overall, ahead of the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus of Frankie Montecalvo
Quotes
Filipe Albuquerque (#10 Wayne Taylor Racing ARX-05) pole qualifier: “It all came together with pole position and the championship points [earned for pole]. The satisfaction is for me, from the drivers point of view, and for the team as well. They gave me the perfect car and I just felt great right away, from Turn 1, the car was really, really good, with a lot of grip. Tomorrow’s race is going to be really rainy, so starting from P1 in a potentially chaotic race, that should help keep us out of trouble. It’s ideal! The pressure is on now, though, we cannot finish behind the #60 and those guys are so fast. We are going to keep fighting for the championship and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow!”
Jack Hawksworth:
“I’m really happy with starting from the front tomorrow. It’s been a great weekend so far all around. The Lexus RC F GT3 has been working really well. The Vasser Sullivan team worked on a few things last night and the car felt a bit better today. We’re starting at the front, however, obviously the big points pay tomorrow. I think we’ve got the guys and we’ve got the car to have a good race tomorrow. Our first GTD PRO win is what we’re going for.”
