IndyCar: Organizers to keep crowd safe from oppressive heat

After a two-year hiatus, the IndyCar Race is returning to the Iowa Speedway this weekend.

With major backing from Hy-Vee and four big concerts 35,000 fans are expected to attend over the three days.

Event organizers in Newton are putting measures in place to keep the crowd safe, especially considering the high temperatures and storm chances in the forecast.

Many first-time visitors will be here on free tickets and not be prepared for how hot it will get, especially for Saturday’s race where temperatures will reach almost 100-degrees in the grandstands.

“Every fan that comes into the venue will be going through a magnetometer and getting their bag checked,” General Manager of Hy-Vee IndyCar Race Weekend Anne Fishgrund said.

Organizers are prepared for high temperatures and severe weather.

“Like any outdoor event, we have to be cautious of what weather comes. We take it in strides trying to plan what’s best for not only our fans, but the race so everyone can stay safe,” Fishgrund said.

Popular music acts will also be performing this weekend, including Florida Georgia Line, Gwen Stefani, Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton.
