The display is now open and Mario Andretti tweeted out that he was very moved by the exhibit.
I got a bit choked up tonight when I saw my 1969 Indy 500 winner in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. The Smithsonian… never ever in my wildest dreams. I wish Andy Granatelli was here with me. Nation of Speed exhibit @airandspace museum pic.twitter.com/8Rzze4hLCg

Coming this fall at the Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum in Washington, DC, the “Nation of Speed” exhibit will recount our desire to become the fastest on land, sea, air, and space in the pursuit of commerce, power, and prestige.
Featuring iconic vehicles from Mario Andretti’s Indy 500 winning race car, Richard Petty’s STP car, to the Sharp DR 90 Nemesis, “Nation of Speed” will be a portrait of human ingenuity — the technology developed to propel people faster and faster— and will explore how the pursuit of speed has shaped American culture and our national identity.
