F1: Zhou admits ‘I don’t know how I survived’

Zhou Guanyu has been cleared to race at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix after passing final medical checks following his horrific crash at Silverstone – but the Chinese rookie still does not know how he escaped with only minor bruises.

The Alfa Romeo driver was sent hurtling across the track upside down after an accident at the first corner of last Sunday’s Formula One race, and had to be helped out of his car after flipping over a tire barrier and coming to rest near a catch fence.

Remarkably, Zhou walked away largely unscathed and again hailed the halo safety device protecting his cockpit, which bore the brunt of the crash, for saving his life at the British Grand Prix.

Zhou’s Halo held up quite well, but not the roll hoop behind his head

“I felt quite lucky looking back,” he said. “I don’t know how I survived, but then looking back obviously I saw the halo saved me for that.

“I had a little bit of bruising but it was all fine after one day. I don’t know how I walked out with such little impact on my body.”

Although immediately after the incident Zhou said he wanted to race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, he still needed to pass a battery of medical checks, which he has now done.

Zhou took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that he had “finished the final medical check” and was “all good to go”
