Supercars: Car smashes into wall as Swiss youngster tops opening Bathurst practice

A high-speed crash midway through this afternoon’s practice session has highlighted the opening day of the return of the LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 1000.

The afternoon practice session was stopped when Theo Koundouris’ Supabarn Audi smashed into the wall at the top of the Mountain.

The car collected the camera that was live streaming today’s action on its way through.

Koundouris was able to walk away from the high speed incident near the famous metal grate of the Mount Panorama circuit, although the Audi did sustain significant damage.

Earlier today Ricardo Feller clocked the fastest time in the first LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 12 Hour session in more than two years.

The 21-year-old Swiss star was the fastest out of the blocks in a promising start for the #777 entry, which he is sharing with Markus Winkelhock and Yasser Shahin.

On his Mount Panorama debut, Feller wound up atop the timesheets with a 2:04.5150s set after the checkered flag, ahead of 2020 winner Jules Gounon.

The best of the Supercars drivers this morning was Cam Waters who was fourth quickest, while defending Supercars’ Champion Shane van Gisbergen was seventh. Bathurst legend Craig Lowndes was 16th quickest in his opening session.

Saturday’s action will include qualifying and the exciting Top 10 Shootout.

Sunday’s race will begin in the dark at 5:15am AEST.

South African quickest in first-ever night practice session

South African endurance racing specialist Kelvin van der Linde has clocked the quickest time in today’s inaugural night practice session at the LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 1000.

It ended a dominate day for the Audi entries into this weekend’s 12 Hour Race. Audi drivers topped all four practice sessions of the opening day and will be looking to convert that form into qualifying speed tomorrow.

Van der Linde’s Audi finished 0.33 ahead of defending Bathurst 1000 Champion Chaz Mostert’s lap time this evening.

One of the event favorites, the Craft Bamboo entry from Hong Kong, was the quickest Mercedes in third, while 2020 Champion Jules Gounon was fourth quickest in the final practice of the day.
