F1 to trial mandatory Q1 and Q2 tire compounds during 2023
Formula 1 drivers will be required to use specific tire compounds during different stages of qualifying in a trial of a new format next year as outlined in this Press Release.
In a statement released after the F1 Commission meeting on Tuesday, the FIA noted that a test run of reduced tire compounds at two race weekends in the 2023 season would be carried out “to evaluate the impact of the reduction in tire allocation on track-running, with the overall intention to move to more sustainable use of tires in the future.”
This change to next year’s rules is explained in the updated sporting regulations released April 29th for the current championship, which has recently been presented by the FIA. The F1 Commission meet this week in London and agreed to test a reduction in the total number of tire sets allowed for a race weekend from 13 to 11. This format will be used at two events during the 2023 season in what will be known as ‘Revised Qualifying Format’ weekend (RFQ Weekend).
Teams and drivers will be allowed to use half as many soft compound tires for these events as usual – four instead of eight. At the same time the allocations of medium and hard tires will increase by one each, to four and three respectively, while drivers will have to run one of each of these compounds during the regular, three-stage qualifying session.
i) Only the hard specification tire can be used in Q1 unless the Q1 session is
declared wet, in which case any specification of tire may be used.
ii) Only the medium specification tire can be used in Q2 unless either the Q1
or Q2 sessions are declared wet, in which case any specification of tire may
be used.
iii) Only the soft specification tire can be used in Q3 unless any qualifying
session is declared wet, in which case any specification of tire may be used.
