F1: Domenicali hints at South African Grand Prix return in TV interview

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has revealed that further discussions have taken place regarding the prospect of adding a South African Grand Prix being added to the Calendar.

Domenicali has revealed in an interview with CNN Sport that Kyalami has made a serious case for inclusion in the 2023 season but said that F1 also had approaches from other African countries to consider.

It is understood that Morocco, whose proximity to Europe makes it an attractive prospect for the elite motorsport series, have also shown interest in putting on a street race through the famous city of Marrakesh.

Domenicali said that the plan was to have 23 races in 2022 — assuring CNN that France was among the hosts but did not confirm reports suggesting South Africa is to return to the schedule at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

“We received interest from Kyalami to be back in the calendar. Of course, we have discussed with them in order to see if they are ready from the technical perspective, the financial perspective, to be inserted in the calendar, so discussions are there. We have received other requests from other countries in Africa … in this moment, I need to keep it confidential.”
