F1: Ricciardo would have liked to drive for Ferrari

Italian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, who calls Australia home, said contract talks with Ferrari never went further than a handful of phone calls before he finally signed with the McLaren f1 team.

In an interview with ESPN this week, Ricciardo confirmed that he held contract talks with Ferrari, although the discussions never went past a “basic level”.

“There was a bit of phone calls but even then it never got to details: numbers, years,” he told the publication.

“But would we have been a good fit? Yeah, I think so, but I didn’t have blinkers on for it.

“Sure, it would have been a nice story to tell.”

Ricciardo added that he was a Ferrari fan as a child as his father was born in Sicily – an Italian island off mainland Italy.

Nonetheless, he said his father was actually a “massive” fan of Brazilian Ayrton Senna, who most notably drove for McLaren and, later, Williams.

“I had a little bit of Ferrari merchandise, but it wasn’t my dream to race for them,” Ricciardo told ESPN. “My dream was always to get into Formula One.”
