Video: Ferrucci crashes hard at Indy (2nd Update)

Ferrucci was evaluated and released from IU Health Methodist Hospital later. He will be evaluated again in the morning by Dr. Billows but is expected to be cleared to drive.

“It was your typical Turn 2 situation where the car gets a gust of wind and goes without warning,” said Ferrucci.

“I’m back at the Speedway, all checked out from medical. I go through the final physical test tomorrow to see if I can get back in the car and drive. I’m a little sore but happy to be here at IMS. The guys are working overly hard to make sure our Hy-Vee Honda is back on track and its going to be really quick.”

“He just has a minor injury on his left leg,” Dr. Billows told NBC Sports reporter Dillon Welch during practice coverage on Peacock. “We’re just sending him downtown for some advanced imaging. He’s able to bear weight. He’s conscious and alert. No really significant injuries.”

Asked whether Ferrucci would be cleared to return for practice Friday, Dr. Billows said, “I would think so, but it’s going to depend upon the rest of the evaluation.”

A statement from IndyCar later clarified that Ferrucci was undergoing further evaluation of his left foot.

Rahal driver Santino Ferrucci clouted the Turn 2 wall at Indy today after turning one of the fastest laps at 224.922 mph.

He went in rear first and may have injured his back or leg so he is off to the hospital for x-rays. He could not put weight on his leg as he exited the car.
