F1’s ‘Marlboro Man’ John Hogan dies

F1’s ‘Marlboro Man’ John Hogan passed away from COVID-19 on Sunday. He played a massive role (along with Bernie Ecclestone) in the transformation of F1 from a rich boys European sport to a global commercial phenomenon. As the marketing director of Marlboro, he drove the exponential spending increase of F1 from the mid-70s to the ‘90s.

Marlboro became synonymous with motor racing, by far the dominant sponsorship presence in F1 with McLaren and then Ferrari. What better way to remember this lovely man than these two videos

John ‘Hogie’ Hogan, the ‘Marlboro Man’ of Formula 1 talks about how he brought commercial sponsorship to the sport, how he got into motor sport himself and his conversations with James Hunt.
