Rinus VeeKay prefers to race IndyCar than F1
Rinus van Kalmthout (i.e. VeeKay) has finished his first season in the IndyCar Series as ‘Rookie of the Year’. The 20-year-old Dutchman thinks he has enough talent to drive in Formula 1, but says he has more chances in the United States.
“I think the level in IndyCar and Formula 1 is equally high. Maybe it’s a little harder to win in IndyCar because all cars are so equal”, explains van Kalmthout in conversation with Motorsport.com. “You have to be a bit lucky and everything has to be right in IndyCar.”
VeeKay thinks he can do very well in Formula 1 himself. “I certainly think so, yes. You have to do it first to be sure, but I think I have the talent to compete in Formula 1 with a good team at the front.”
However, the Dutchman realizes that F1 is 99% car and 1 % driver, so his chances are better in America.
Because of the Road to Indy scholarship system you have more chance with talent than you would have in F1.
“The pinnacle of motorsport is very cool, but if I do something I also want to win. And that’s possible in IndyCar, at least there’s a chance if you’re good because the cars are the same”, concluded VeeKay.
