Supercars announce final three events of 2020 with new dates

The 60th edition of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship will finish in spectacular style at its showpiece event, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

The event was confirmed as the final on this year’s reworked schedule today – with a new date of October 18, one week later than previously announced.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer says all ticketing options for the four-day event are still being discussed with relevant authorities and an announcement will be made in due course.

“This is our marquee event on the calendar and this year it will also be our series decider, making it an even more memorable occasion.

“We looked at all options beyond Bathurst as well as the best options for our Victorian teams, who will have been on the road for over 100 days by the completion of the event.

“Getting those drivers, team personnel and officials’ home to loved ones was at the forefront of this decision.

“The October 18 date change was made to allow all teams adequate time to prepare for the biggest event of the year.

“We will now start planning for our first-ever grand finale at our most iconic circuit, a fitting farewell for our 60th year of racing.”

Regarding ticketing options Mr Seamer said it is a work in progress.

“Supercars will continue working closely with NSW Health, Bathurst Regional City Council, emergency services, broadcasters and the NSW Government on planning for the 2020 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000,” he said.

“We will meet all COVID-19 safety requirements necessary to ensure this year’s Great Race goes ahead.”

Double Header at The Bend in September

Meanwhile two events have been announced for Tailem Bend – to be run on back-to-back weekends: Two SuperSprints on September 19-20 and on September 26-27.

“In what has been the most challenging year in living memory, I am altogether excited, relieved, and looking forward to The Bend being part of the 2020 championship,” The Bend Managing Director, Sam Shahin said.

“It is a credit to drivers, team members, owners, Supercars and the wider motorsport community that the series has been able to navigate the difficult circumstances of the past 6 months.

“It demonstrates the tenacity and determination of the sport and makes us feel even prouder of being part of this community.

“The task is now in front of us to put on the best events possible in September, essentially cramming what normally takes 6 months of planning into 3 weeks, but we love a challenge!”

Talks are underway around test days and co-driver sessions with more details to be released in due course.

The Bend SuperSprint events will permit fans to each day of racing, with details to be released in coming days.
