Genoa Racing strong in MSR Houston test
After posting the fastest overall times on both series test days several weeks ago at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Cameron, last season’s Pro Mazda champion, showed his strength again posting times in the top five while making the final pre-season testing adjustments in preparation for the season opener at Long Beach. Former Karting phenom and Atlantic front-runner Sciuto placed his Genoa race car squarely in the top five as well in his first outing with the team.
Genoa spent the majority of the testing fine-tuning their team chemistry and communication that showed in impressive gains from session to session with both drivers each day. Unfortunately for Sciuto, he suffered from an illness and was unable to complete the second test day, ending up 5th quick overall.
Genoa now is set with Cameron and Sciuto for the season opener in Long Beach and stated Thomas Knapp, principal of Genoa and team technical director, “we already knew that Dane will be a force from his showing in the first two tests of the pre season and were super impressed with young Alan Sciuto’s commitment, focus and speed in the car. We feel that these two champions will raise each other’s game, as well as the team’s championship focus and despite our lack of experience here at MSR, we made great gains, ended up quick and are very excited about heading for Long Beach to open the championship chase. Both Angelo and I are extremely pleased with the team’s depth of talent and can’t wait to hit the streets of Long Beach with these two quick, young racers."
Team owner Angelo Ferro mirrored Knapp’s enthusiasm by adding, “Thomas and the guys have put together a great team and with these two, incredibly talented young drivers, the level of excitement is beyond belief. I can’t wait for Genoa to roll out at Long Beach, a place where so many great racing memories have been forged."
Cameron and Sciuto shared the team’s enthusiasm, Cameron stating, “The MSR test went quite well. It was great to get another couple days working with the team before Long Beach and everyone continues to gel very well together. We ran through many changes, were able to make steady progress and end the two-day test very strong. I'm looking forward to my first Long Beach Grand Prix experience, it’s a race I have attended many times and I can’t wait to get out on track. We have a good car and I have a great team behind me so I know we will be in contention for the Rookie of The Year award as well as a contender for the Championship!" Sciuto added, “I am first, most grateful for the opportunity that Genoa gave me to test in their car at MSR on such short notice. I was pleased that after every session the team and I were able to work so well together and consistently improve the cars performance. That’s all a driver can ask for. I am really excited to announce that with the support of " Deans Ultra Plug" I will be able to once again compete at Long Beach in front of my home crowd with Genoa Racing."
Founded by successful San Francisco-based businessman Angelo Ferro in the early 1980s, Genoa Racing first entered Atlantic competition in 1991. The team was an immediate championship contender with Thomas Knapp as team manager/engineer and a young American named Jimmy Vasser as its driver. Now, sixteen years later, these same three principals have reunited under the Genoa Racing banner to return to glory.
