Villeneuve demoted to Speedcar

Fired from F1 for being too slow, Villeneuve is finding his star doesn't shine bright anywhere now

After turning his nose up to Champ Car and IndyCar because he thought he was too good, and then trying his hand at NASCAR and failing miserably, 1997 Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve has made a move that will see him back amongst his retired out-to-pasture racing colleagues after signing on to race in the 2008/9 Speedcar series.

Although the official calendar for the second season has not yet been confirmed, Jean Alesi has revealed that they will once again be racing as part of the support races at the 2009 Bahrain and Malaysian Grand Prix and the Frenchman is thrilled that Villeneuve will be lining up on the Speedcar grid.

“Johnny Herbert will be back to defend his title of course and we are pleased to add Jacques Villeneuve to our shores for the entire season," Alesi said. “I am really thrilled to have Jacques join us. I raced against him in F1 and he is certainly the kind of driver we need to make a great spectacle for the fans and win races in Speedcar."

The series will kick off in Dubai on the fifth of December.
