UPS to sponsor Edwards?

If UPS is in talks to become part of Carl Edwards’ sponsorship program next year, the driver of the No. 99 Ford has yet to be part of the discussions.

Edwards was aware of Friday’s Sports Business Daily story that indicated UPS, which currently sponsors David Ragan in the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, would reduce its commitment significantly next year and is talking with RFR brass about sponsoring Edwards for four to eight races.

That would put Edwards in the uncomfortable position of benefiting from a business move that might jeopardize the ride of a teammate.

“I read it, too, and I don’t know anything other than what it said," Edwards told Sporting News on Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, when asked about the report. “I still don’t know that it’s anything more than a rumor. Nobody’s come to me and said, ‘Hey, here’s what’s happening; here’s what’s going on.’ I wish I knew."

Edwards nevertheless can appreciate the value of the UPS sponsorship to the organization.

“I think they’ve done a great job for our team," Edwards said. “Hopefully, David gets some more wins for them this year, and hopefully they want to be back in whatever capacity is good for them. I’m sure (RFR president) Steve Newmark and (owner Jack) Roush will accommodate ‘em in whatever they want to do." Sporting News
