Power calls for elimination of high-banked ovals

Pack Racing and photo finishes are common on high-banked 100% throttle tracks for IndyCars

IndyCar driver Will Power said he believes high-banked ovals should be removed from the series.

"I'd rather not race on high-banked ovals," he said. "I just think all the high-banked ovals are designed for NASCAR, not Indy cars. NASCAR (cars) are three times the weight, they have less tire on (the) track and compared to IndyCar, really has no downforce."

When asked if IndyCar drivers would boycott racing on high-banked ovals, Power said: "I don't think we should have to do that. IndyCar itself as a series should make the right decision, and safety always has to come first. I'm sure they will make the right decision."

Helio Castroneves replaced Greg Moore at Penske in 2000. Moore signed with Penske in 1999, but never competed before his death in a wreck at Fontana.

"I think those things (safety) have already been addressed with the new car," Castroneves said. "We still have to look to the extreme so we don't have that (tragedy). You have to go beyond the extreme. Like I said, maybe the 11/2-mile tracks right now shouldn't be the place (for the IndyCar series)."

When asked if he ever thinks about retiring after Wheldon's death, Castroneves replied: "I don't. I know it's rough when you say something like that. It's (cockpit) a place where I'm comfortable. I love what I do, and if you put it that way, maybe people will understand. We know the risk and our families know the risk." Detroit News
